How We Created a Funny Commercial to Help Launch This Product with Moose Games

On the heels of our first product-launch collaboration with Moose Toys (read more about Beast Lab here), Likely was invited back to create content for an exciting new game: Pickleball Blast. With the sport’s explosion in popularity across the country, the anticipation for this Target-exclusive product was high.

 

Pickleball Blast is a family board game that puts a new spin on America’s fastest growing sport, pickleball. Perfect for game nights or rainy days, this two-player game features a tabletop court and net with attached “screamin’ pickle” and two thumb-action pickleball paddles. Players serve, slam, and swat to send the screamin’ pickle soaring – flipping the pickle lids at the other end of the court.

The Plan

If you ask us, a product like Pickleball Blast needs a fun, creative commercial. And with our team’s background producing videos for all kinds of “curiously awesome products”, this challenge was right up our alley. Plus, it’s another step toward our goal of creating a Super Bowl commercial.

We knew the spot needed a strong concept that would make viewers hesitate before hitting the “skip ad” button. One of our core beliefs is that people don’t want to be interrupted with a sales pitch; they’re more likely to convert after being entertained. How do you do that in less than 30 seconds? Our strategy went like this:

  1. Relatable hook

  2. Funny twist

  3. Contrast the product with a ridiculous alternative

  4. Reveal the product as a fun solution

Combined with plenty of still images, Likely delivered enough content to fill out Target’s product detail page for Pickleball Blast. Plus, Moose launched a new social media account dedicated to its original games, with Pickleball Blast as the lead product.
